Dams going safely over the top

Article Abstract:

Engineers have discovered the viability of cellular concrete mats (CCMs) for the repair and maintenance of old dams. Cellular concrete mats provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional upgrade methods, expanding spillways and elevating crests. These prevent erosion during overtopping flows and earlier tests showed that these systems performed satisfactorily when subjected to full-scale overtopping flow tests. CCMs have been used to repair the Blue Ridge Parkway Dams at Bass Lake, Price Lake and Trout Lake.
