Draining the language out of color

Article Abstract:

Paul Kay, professor of linguistics at University of California, Berkeley believes that our words shape our thoughts, particularly in respect to color, and the number of words that a culture uses to describe colors corresponds to its degree of industrialization. Kay concludes that linguistic relativists may be correct that the languages people speak mold their thoughts.

Studies of the mental processes of chess grandmasters revealed clues to how people become experts in other fields like training, writing, sports and music as well. Evidence indicates motivation as a more important factor than innate ability in the development of expertise and some believe that experts are made, not born.
