EPA drinking water research plan released; nine area-specific plans due by October

Article Abstract:

The EPA's Office of Research and Development is working on research plans for nine subject areas which will be used as guides for funding decisions in 1998. The first plan, which concerns drinking water disinfection, has been submitted in Mar. 1996 to a subcommittee of the Science Advisory Board. The eight other research plans will be ready for review by Oct. 1996. High priority will be given to six topics, namely, particulate matter, endocrine disruptors, ecosystem protection, pollution prevention and technology, and human health protection. Three topics, the Environmental Monitoring and Assessment program, global change and waste characterization and management, will have detailed plans.

Are toxics release inventory reductions real?

Article Abstract:

A survey of firms reporting large decreases in their Toxic Release Inventory report showed that no significant reductions were made by the firms in terms of source reduction activities. The survey found out that only the report where firms changed plant operations or production levels were significant indicators of pollutant discharge reductions. The study showed that many firms simply redefined on-site recycling as in-process recovery to effect a reduction in the reported waste generated.
