Earthquakes: a new look at cracked masonry

Article Abstract:

The enactment of the Damaged Building Repairs Ordinance in Oakland, CA, after the Loma Prieta earthquake , as well as the economic considerations of its inhabitants and their fear liability, has stalled the rehabilitation of damaged buildings there. This situation not only affects the economy of Oakland, but this neglect has downgraded the historical significance of the place. An alternative system of repair and strengthening based on the principle of masonry cracking as a response and not as a failure is discussed and applied on two building projects.

Composite laminate keeps electricity flowing

Article Abstract:

A joint report by the US Army Construction Engineering Laboratories and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has identified a composite laminate material as possible reinforcement for masonry walls to prevent damages due to earthquakes. The laminate may consist of either fiberglass or carbon fabric with a thin layer of epoxy. The report, which will be released in Jun 1998, was a result of the evaluations made on 200 electrical substations of TVA.

Masonry carries the load

Article Abstract:

Four case studies that highlight the use of masonry as structural material are given. Three are laboratory experiments where masonry is subjected to load testing. The fourth case presents the performance of a brick firehouse during the Loma Prieta earthquake. The case studies show that masonry can be tested, evaluated and designed to be used as construction material.
