Engineering at a crossroads

Article Abstract:

Engineering was the nation's largest profession and held the greatest promise in the 1970s. Progress within the profession in the 25 years since 1973 has been impressive. However, minorities continue to be significantly under-represented in engineering especially in the field of civil engineering. The increasingly powerful swell of anti-affirmative sentiment is sweeping the nation and threatens the gains already accomplished in equal opportunity efforts and future progress. As a result, the US continues to rely too heavily on foreign engineers.

Defensive engineering can be dangerous

Article Abstract:

The tendency of being defensive in environmental engineering is a liability the profession could do without. Defensive engineering is the outcome of insistence of businesses to hasten project completion or that there be a cutback in costs beyond proper standards. While it is acknowledged that competition is important to promote the economics of the environmentalfield, its true value of service based on technical creativity should not be ignored.

Discovering your niche: The key to success for smaller consulting engineering firms is knowing your market focus and controlling your direction

Article Abstract:

Small consulting engineering companies often work on multiple projects without a clear direction, which may eventually affect quality. It is important to define the markets for which a company is best suited and establish a vision or focus. An experienced facilitator will be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a company and help through the strategic planning process.
