Engineering: environmental vs. developmental goals

Article Abstract:

Civil engineers can resolve the conflict between environmental and developmental goals. They should withstand pressures for them to meet budget costs at the expense of efficiency and explore possibilities for quality improvement at reduced costs. They should inform the public about new scientific knowledge so that the latter can assess projects more objectively. They should employ effective risk assessment programs so that they can evaluate a project's goals and choose the best applicable design. Finally, they should allow for practical construction and operation in their designs.

Civil engineers need to stay together

Article Abstract:

Civil engineers should understand the importance of working together to better serve society. There is no need for civil engineers with specialized training to form their own organizations and contribute further to division of their profession. Without unity, it will also be impossible to develop the leadership skills of young engineers. Leaders of engineering societies like the American Society of Civil Engineers should educate their members on the importance of leadership and responsibility.

ASCE's new paradigm

Article Abstract:

Many ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) members are enthusiastic about the proposed creation of institutes devoted to single-disciplines within the field of civil engineering as this will increase ASCE's influence in the field. The Geo-Institute and the Structural Institute are likely to be created in Nov 1996. The institutes will remove a major part of the Technical Activities Committee's membership and revenue, but will provide input on educational, registration, and ethical issues.
