Governing body clamps down on its new chief executive

Article Abstract:

The NAE governing council restricted Pres Liebowitz's powers over hiring and the budget just before he was formally installed. Liebowitz had become the first president not selected or approved by the council. The squabbling may be preventing the NAE from conducting its government-advisory duties.

Clinton names adviser, NSF chief

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton has nominated NSF director Neal Lane to be his science adviser. He also nominated biologist Rita Colwell of the University of Maryland to replace Lane as NSF head. The nominations are part of the administration science strategy emphasizing basic research.
