Ground attack

Article Abstract:

The soils that surrounds buried pipes and foundations have a corrosive effect on their surfaces and protection is essential. Barrier coatings are effective for concrete structures and carbon steel pipes, but it is important that the right type of coating is used, depending upon the nature of the soil. Epoxy polymers are the most efficient barrier coatings for concrete as they adhere well and offer low water permeability. Barrier coatings for buried pipe include coal tar enamel and fusion-bonded epoxy coatings.

Ground improvement salvation

Article Abstract:

New technology, building specifications, and contracting practices should be introduced to improve construction engineering and to minimize risks. The use of steel or concrete in underground construction may fail to assure safety unless the ground which ultimately supports the edifice is properly pretreated. Instead of changing the standards we need to use a different approach to their application. Engineering aptitude rather than the lowest bid should determine the contractor.
