Hands on: The complex design and function of the human hand presents prosthetic designers with difficult challenges for which some elegant solutions are being developed

Article Abstract:

Reproducing the full range of movements and facilities of the human hand in a convincing prosthesis at an affordable price is out of the bounds of current technology. A new prosthetic hand has been developed at Oxford University's Orthopaedic Engineering Centre. The prosthetic hand assigns control to a microprocessor, leaving the user to command the basic hand movements. The user controls the hand with existing muscles although without direct physical connections, but via dry surface electrodes that pick up muscle signals.

Cranes are increasingly cost effective, flexible and safe to use. Crane designs have gradually changed to accommodate improved technologies such as satellite navigation systems. Modern cranes use alternating current motors and computer software for improved performance, according to design company Mannesmann Dematic representative George Rymes. Programmable logic controllers provide automated sequence processes.

Article Abstract:

Aircraft performance depends on lift, weight, thrust and drag, and aeronautical engineers continue to seek to minimise the effects of drag. If drag is reduced, less thrust is needed, speed and lift can be increased and aircraft payload can be raised.
