Pharmaceutical companies are engaged in a bidding war for the services of experts in bioinformatics, a field combining biology and computer science. The growth of public banks of genetic information has spurred hopes that computer processing can be applied to create new drugs and therapies.

Article Abstract:

Most immunologists do not agree with the network theory published by Thereza Imanishi-Kari in the Apr 25, 1986, issue of Cell. Charges of misconduct were dismissed against the researcher, who held that the regulation of the immune system includes the formation of networks of antibodies.

NCI cuts contracts to fund more grants

Article Abstract:

NCI director Richard Klausner plans to reduce contract research in 1996 and increase grants to outside projects. An unexpected budget increase and a 10% cut in contract budgets requested by Klausner will result in $70 million more for grants than in 1995.
