Aggressive implementation of advance directives
Article Abstract:
Nurses can play an important role in the implementation of advance directives for terminal medical care. Living wills describe a patient's desires regarding medical care choices at the end of life. Durable power of attorney documents assign this decision-making power to another person to make medical decisions. Both advance directive instruments retain the autonomy of the patient, even when incompetent. As end-of-life care is expensive and sometimes futile, advance directives can save health care costs. Nurses are trusted caregivers who can promote such declarations.

Senior presidential adviser Rahm Emanuel's political career began when he got involved in the congressional campaign of David Robinson of Illinois. In 1991, he joined Pres Bill Clinton's campaign for presidency as national finance director. Emanuel worked for the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
