Mixed-Mode fatigue crack growth in stainless steels under biaxial loading

Article Abstract:

Stainless-steel cruciform specimens having a biaxially loaded center initial crack oriented at 45 degree are analyzed by Mixed-Mode fatigue crack propagation tests. During in-phase biaxial loading, the crack grows in deflected paths, and the initial growth angles are less than 50 degree. During out-of-phase biaxial loading, the crack grows in branched paths, and the initial crack growth angles are more than 50 degree. Delta-K(sub II) is almost zero along the deflected or branched crack path, and delta-K(sub I) increases with crack growth, making the cracks propagate in Mode 1.

Symmetric branching of mode II and mixed-mode fatigue crack growth in a stainless steel

Article Abstract:

The propagation rate of branched cracks depends on both delta-K(sub I) and the ratio of the minimum and maximum stress intensity factors in a cruciform with an initial crack in the middle and at 45 degree to the loading axes. Fatigue experiments show that delta-K(sub II) value, calculated by finite element methods, is almost zero along all the branches. This indicates that all the branches are in Mode 1 cracks. The crack propagation rate is greater for the same delta-K(sub I) in the early stages as compared to the subsequent stages.
