Mosses as model systems for the study of metabolism and development

Article Abstract:

Developmental responses to hormones and to environmental inputs can be studied both at the level of individual cells and in multicellular tissues. Molecular techniques including gene inactivation by targeted gene replacement or by RNA interference, together with the nearly completed sequencing of the Physcomitrella patents genome, open the way for detailed study of the functions of genes involved in both development and metabolism.

Phytoremediation

Article Abstract:

Phytoremediation, the use of plants and their associated microbes for environmental cleanup, has gained acceptance as a cost effective, noninvasive alternative or complementary technology for engineering-based remediation methods. The different phytoremediation technologies are reviewed, including their applicability for various organic and inorganic pollutants and most suitable plant species.

Breathing with chlorinated solvents

Article Abstract:

Researchers have isolated an anaerobic bacterium that can break down chlorinated solvents through halorespiration and have the potential to clean them from the environment. The detoxification process is discussed.
