Not so plain sailing

Article Abstract:

The safety, efficiency and speed of today's sailing yachts can be attributed to new materials, new technology and innovative design ideas. Past designs were distorted to meet the racing requirements of the International Offshore Rule, but different rules mean that modern hull shapes are more sea-friendly than previously. Advances in reefing technology and keel design make modern yachts more controllable, while the provision of more cabin space and stability are among the key issues facing designers.

For good measure

Article Abstract:

The latest coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) enable engineers to measure complex parts and assemblies with increased accuracy. These can measure different materials and come in various sizes to measure assemblies ranging from aircraft wing structures to microelectronics components. Some also have component recognition systems and can measure hundreds of parts in minutes. The latest CMM systems and trends in the CMM industry are also described.
