Article Abstract:

Railway technology has continued to develop, with the greatest progression being seen in signalling and train control. There has been a move towards block systems and away from fixed block lineside signalling and the new European Train Control system has been developed as the result of a need to integrate railway systems in Europe. Future developments are likely to include high-speed tilting trains, mixed mode freight transport, and state-of-the art signalling and train control.

The new generation of network architecture supports distributed computing and has led to the introduction of specialist transmitting devices such as routers and bridges.
