Out of sight, out of time

Article Abstract:

Civil engineers may face an increased demand for help with replacing or upgrading underground storage tank (UST) during 1998. UST owners have until Dec 22 1998 to ensure that their tanks comply with federal regulations passed 10 years earlier. Regulation requirements include registration, corrosion resistance and the installation of leak detection systems. The legislation has been effective in reducing contamination of sites, but 50% of tanks were still uncompliant at the end of 1997, with the government sector performing particularly badly in this respect.
