Planning By Computer: The Inside Answer

Article Abstract:

Narendra Karmarkar of AT&T Bell Laboratories has developed a new linear programming scheme. The 'simplex' method takes fifty times longer to solve a 5,000 variables problem than does Karmarkar's method. Karmarkar expects improvements to be made on his program. It has not yet been put to business use.

Automated highways: cars that drive themselves in tight formation might alleviate the congestion now plaguing urban freeways

Article Abstract:

Automated highways are seen as one of the promising technological solution to reduce congestion in urban road systems. The system relies on the installation of intelligent systems in the car which senses both inputs from similarly-equipped cars and from the highway.
