Science Blueprint Is High on Ideals, Light on Details

Article Abstract:

A World Conference on Science, held in Budapest, Hungary, was the first such conference in 20 years. Some 1,800 scientists, policy makers, and activists were in attendance and, although there were heated social and professional debates, final documents were issued to help guide scientists into the 21st century. Details of the conference are discussed.

Life-sciences R&D, national prosperity, and industrial competitiveness

Article Abstract:

Formal science and technology policies are needed to ensure that society continues to reap the social and economic benefits of research in an era of severe spending limits. Basic as well as applied research can and should be subjected to cost-benefit analysis. The UK's new science policy is analyzed.
