Article Abstract:

"Scotian Shelf 1" and "Scotian Shelf 2" are underwater recordings of sounds of gas gun explosions along with the whistles and clicks of dolphins and pilot whales in the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia. The explosions, which are the sounds of a seismic exploration for petroleum deposits by oil and gas companies, are powerful enough to destroy the hearing and communication abilities of these animals, which might lead to their death.

An ice shelf breakup

Article Abstract:

A team led by Helmut Rott has documented the breakup of the Larsen Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. Though the event took less than a week, it was the result of climatic changes that took perhaps many years. Possible revelations about Antarctic climatology from the event are discussed.

There has been a great deal of concern over the potential environmental effects if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet were to fall into the ocean. Ice streams on the sheet threaten to destabalize the area, though the lifetime of the sheet is not fully known.
