Soft tools for environmental management

Article Abstract:

New challenges to environmental integrity are urging for the replacement of the command-and-control approach in environmental regulation. Despite the success of the technique in the past, it cannot be expected to shoulder the burden of future environmental improvements alone. Aside from its defects, there are new environmental issues that lend bigger challenges and necessitate the use of various environmental management tools. However, the novelty of the idea of widespread dissemination of environmental information leaves little evidence to substantiate the hopes of its advocates.

Environmental policy comes of age in Europe

Article Abstract:

The EU decided to create an environmental policy known as the 'Paris Declaration' upon the 1972 Union-wide Paris Summit convention. The Paris Declaration encouraged EU to adopt the first Environmental Action Program which covered the years 1973-1976. EU environmental policy has developed since then, and it now upholds several precepts such as pollution reduction, logical management of land and natural resources through new technological developments and integration of environmental concerns and goals into other areas of EU policy.

Environmental labels: a new policy strategy

Article Abstract:

The proliferation of consumer products labeled as 'environment friendly' has led to initiatives aimed at verifying the environmental claims made by manufacturers. These include third-party environmental certification programs that evaluate products, the Federal Trade Commission's guidelines of environmental marketing claims, and the EPA's Energy Star Computers Program and Consumer Labeling Initiative.
