Stable crack growth in ceramics at ambient and elevated temperatures

Article Abstract:

Quasi-static, stable crack propagation tests in ceramics are performed by a new method where the crack mouth opening displacement is recorded continuously by a laser extensometer during the course of the test. A servo hydraulic testing machine is controlled by the signal obtained from the laser extensometer. The fracture behavior of ceramics is characterized by these tests. The fracture behavior of ytria-partially stabilized zirconia ceramic is also determined by this method.

Role of crack wake toughening on elevated temperature crack growth in a fiber reinforced ceramic composite

Article Abstract:

The nature of elevated temperature failure behavior in composites that have bridged cracks is predicted by the development of theoretical models. For the case where crack front creep exists, a thermally activated time-dependent bridging matrix is applied. After an initial delay period, the stable crack growth is predicted in the presence and absence of crack front creep, which is dependent upon the crack size and wake parameters.

A unified approach to physically based weakest-link theories for multiaxial fracture of ceramics

Article Abstract:

Two physically based weakest-link strategies, usually used for determining the reliability of ceramic components in multiaxial states of stress, are examined. These are Evans' multiaxial elemental strength method and Baldorf's flaw density technique. The two equations can be simultaneously derived from the basic assumptions and simply regarded as two different techniques for evaluating the same integral.
