Success or failure: a tale of two projects

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the design defects and incorrect construction procedures implicated in the failure of an underpinning project in April 1984 helped in the successful completion of a similar project in 1994. The analysis showed that construction procedures should be detailed in sequence, and the use of eccentric loading on footing should be avoided. The lateral stability and eccentric effects on critical bearing walls should be examined. Structural renovation involving complex underpinning should be assigned to expert contractors who should be given a detailed construction design.

Computer analysis helps lower cost

Article Abstract:

A group of engineers were selecting a lower-cost material of construction for a 55,000 cu ft thickener tank. Concrete was considered as an alternative to the high-priced stainless steel. To determine if using concrete could withstand thermal stress and its other requirments, a computer based three thermal and static stress analysis program was used to examine the possible options. Results indicate that a tank made of insulated concrete would cost 30% less than the cost of a stainless tank.
