The Mapmaking Mind

Article Abstract:

All of the five sense are used in delivering a map of the world which guides motor activity. Objects in space could not be localized if the other information available came out of the optic nerve. The brain must know the orientation of the eyes in the head and the position of the head on the shoulders to process the images that fall upon the retina. Neuroscientists studied neurons in monkeys to see how the brain performs these tasks.

New Clues to How Proteins Link Up to Run the Cell

Article Abstract:

A research report from biologist Kun Ping Lu of Harvard Medical School indicates that the binding domains of proteins are an important factor in the assembling and disassembling of cells. Specifically, the WW domain amino acid sequence in proteins binds to other proteins when the target's serine amino acids feature a phosphate group.

Alzheimer's Treatments That Work Now

Article Abstract:

New treatments for Alzheimer's disease patients and the use of behavioral therapy have been shown to delay the neurodegeneration associated with the disease that has been so detrimental. Behavioral research is proving that some of the symptoms and suffering the patients experience can be alleviated while cures are being sought.
