The greening of garbage

Article Abstract:

Two ways to reduce the high amount of garbage are to charge consumers for every bag of garbage they dump, and to require industry to recycle its own packaging. Consumers, however, might resort to illegal disposal of waste, and recycling might be too expensive for industries.

A risk worth taking

Several banks and financial groups are discovering that the poor in the US and Third World countries are good credit risks for small loans with short repayment periods. The loan program of Grameen Bank of Bangladesh is described.

Grants and loans made from rich to poor countries often work to the detriment of the citizens of the poor country due to incompetence, corruption and inappropriately selected projects.
