Welsh revival

Article Abstract:

The manufacturing sector of Wales grew by over 25% between 1981 and 1989 when the overall British manufacturing industry declined by six percent. The Welsh steel industry currently remains at the forefront of Welsh manufacturing, contributing substantially to the country's Gross Domestic Product and employment. However, there has been an increase in engineering firms serving the information technology and multimedia markets. Government officials have expressed their desire for engineering in these fields to occupy a larger share of the Welsh manufacturing sector.

Tightening the buckle

Article Abstract:

Buried and seabed pipelines usually develop leaks and fractures during vertical and lateral buckling due to pressure and thermal stresses. To solve this problem, a group of researchers from the engineering department of the Cambridge University, which was led by Prof Andrew Palmer and Prof Chris Calladine, studied the causes of sub-sea pipelines' upheaval buckling. They have discovered that this problem rises when pipes reach their maximum amplitude and maximum bending stress and, thus can be prevented by designing and operating pipelines accordingly.

Telematics: Telematics, or the combination of information and communications technologies, is winning friends in an ever widening series of applications

Article Abstract:

Telematics combines information and communications technologies and is finding new applications. Research at the University of Wales is developing a range of low-cost sensors that could be interfaced with a standard telephone to allow GPs to undertake remote diagnoses. Also a collaboration between the university and Penn Pharmaceuticals of South Wales has led to the development of a system to remotely dispense and monitor drug dosages.
