Wisconsin welfare plan lacks compassion, hope

Article Abstract:

Wisconsin's new welfare reform plan is seen to lack compassion and hope for the state's unemployable children which make up two-thirds of the state's welfare recipients. Wisconsin Works aims to be a full-employment program which requires all eligible participants to work, provides benefits to those who work and penalizes recipients who fail to work by reducing their benefit checks by $5.15 for each hour of work missed, or totally cutting their benefits if they do not work. Worse still, the misguided W-2 program does not encourage education and training, to the loss of Wisconsin's children.

Former welfare recipient helps debunk stereotypes

Article Abstract:

A former welfare recipient who is now a professor, writer and administrator reveals her long-past shadowy experiences of dependence on the welfare system. She recalls the two years she received assistance from the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) welfare program and appreciates the system's begrudging generosity that carried her through a rough but rewarding phase of her life. She calls on former AFDC welfare recipients to come out into the open and relate their past experiences so that present welfare recipients will gain inspiration and hope from their stories.
