Attention, frailty, and falls: the effect of a manual task on basic mobility

Article Abstract:

Distractions while walking may affect balance in elderly people, thus increasing their risk of falling. Researchers compared the time it took for 42 elderly people to walk three meters while carrying a glass of water with the time it took to walk three meters without such a distraction. Those who took 4.5 seconds or longer while carrying the water were considered to be distracted by the task. Those 10 subjects were almost 5 times more likely to fall during the follow-up period.
