Ascription or productivity? The determinants of departmental success in the NRC quality ratings

Article Abstract:

The findings of cross-sectional analyses of the National Research Council evaluations of the quality of 95 sociology departments are presented. The relative influence of ascriptive factors on ratings of sociology departments is analyzed by investigating the explanatory power of some ascribed features ignored in previous studies. In addition to the influence of ascription, another issue that is investigated is the distribution of professional recognition within departments.
