The problematic relationship between sexuality and gender in theorizing desire is explained through an example of male same-sex desire. Intersection between social norms and the personal aspects of life have important implications for shame with regard to same-sex desire.

The Oedipus complex is discussed in terms of Sigmund Freud's analysis of its positive and negative sides and also the Lacanian reading of the complex. Negative Oedipus complex or a non-normative Oedipal theory is observed in the memoirs of people analyzed by Freud.
