Evaluation of children's stay in institutions: What is working?

Article Abstract:

A quantitative (about 653 older boys and girls who left special education centers less than 10 years ago) and qualitative approach is presented. The quantitative study, researching factors of success in special education centers, shows the importance of placement for three or four years, a later exit between 19 and 21 years, the harm done by many placements, and the importance of collaboration between parents and youth workers.

Article Abstract:

A qualitative study aims to interpret the results of a randomized controlled trial comparing two educational programs in evidence-based medicine (EBM) for medical students at the University of Oslo from the year 2002 to 2003. A stepwise evaluation model that might be useful in evaluating other socially complex interventions is presented.
