Fertility and Pension Programs in LDC: A Model of Mutual Reinforcement

Article Abstract:

Research is needed which considers the determinants of pension expenditure in relation to determinants of fertility. This would clarify the ways in which demographic demand factors impact social welfare policy. This analysis focuses on fertility levels, life expectancy and old age dependency ratios as independent demographic variables as demand factors. The pension/fertility link is analyzed as to cause and effect. Four reasons are given for the influence of fertilty patterns on pension demands. Low fertility's impact on the children is considered. Regression analysis is used; tables of primary regression results, regression results with alternate lags and subset results are included.

Methods and impact of health screening for hospital staff

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted among the staff of a London teaching hospital to evaluate the effectiveness of simple informational feedback and extensive feedback during health screening in improving health beliefs and behaviors. The results showed that extensive feedback, which involved target-setting and a written contract, was more effective in improving health behaviors but was not accompanied by belief or attitude change. The implications for programs that seek to improve employee attendance in health screening and consistency of engagement in health-promoting activities are discussed.
