Geographical specialization in Spanish agriculture before and after integration in the European Union

Article Abstract:

The evolution of agricultural product specialization at the farm and county levels in Spain from 1979 to 1997 is analyzed. The case study of Spain shows that integration in European Union and implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy led to the increase in regional specialization as, opposed to farm-level specialization with regions, and that regional specialization increased most in regions initially specializing in export-oriented products.

Second-best redistribution through public investment: a characterization, an empirical list and an application in the case of Spain

Article Abstract:

The paper argues that redistributive regional policies can be justified in a second-best world. The optimal intensity of such policies depends on the regional inequality and in case of Spain exceeds the optimal degree of redistribution. The paper develops an empirical methodology comprising observed distribution with the optimal allocation.
