Measuring motivation to volunteer in human services

Article Abstract:

In this study, 258 volunteers in human services and 104 nonvolunteers were asked to rank in importance 28 motives for volunteering that had been identified in a thorough literature review. According to the literature, most researchers assume that motivation to volunteer (MTV) is a two- or three-dimensional phenomenon, but very few studies have carried out an empirical analysis of the internal dimensionality of MTV. The present findings indicate that when all 28 motives were subjected to various types of factor analysis, most items were grouped together on one factor. In other words, a unidimensional scale was obtained. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Using Key-Word in Context Concordance Programs for Qualitative and Quantitative Social Research

Article Abstract:

The uses of the computer for qualitative and quantitative research in social science fields are discussed. Emphasis is placed on potential uses of the computer based on its language-processing capabilities, in particular the Key-Word-n-Context (KWIC) text-processing programs. KWIC concordance programs are explained. Particular features described are: key word alignment; context; text identification; exclusion list; inclusion list; and pre-coding. Suggestions for KWIC use in qualitative and content analyses are proposed. Specific studies are cited. An introduction by the editor and supplemental author's notes are included.

Measuring social capital in five communities

Article Abstract:

The authors present a definition of social capital based on participation in community networks, social norms, reciprocity, trust, the commons, and social agency. The results of questionnaires administered in five Australian communities to measure social capital are discussed.
