Organizational processes to meet new performance criteria: Chinese pharmaceutical firms in transition

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government has acknowledged that for its huge economy to attain growth, performance results should not be based on scale. Rather, output, sales, or profit returns must be characterized by factors of efficiency. Positive performance outcomes must not be achieved solely through increased input. This performance criterion has baffled state-owned Chinese enterprises since market reforms were initiated in the 1980s to open up China's economy. State-owned ventures in China absurdly report rising revenues despite performance outcomes characterized by low efficiency.
