Social background and social context effects on young men's idleness transitions

Article Abstract:

A study by the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth shows that the social context and background are important factors in determining a young adult's idleness. The social context explains a weak labor force attachment among nonwhite youths. Socio-economic factors are better determinants of idleness among white youths. Racial inequality plays a significant role in the effects of the social context and background. The structure of the labor market is also instrumental in determining youth inactivity.

The determinants of young women's wages: comparing the effects of individual and occupational labor market characteristics

Article Abstract:

The wages of young women are determined both by their human capital and by the characteristics of their occupations. White mothers are paid less than non-mothers. For women, less work experience, and working in a female-dominated occupation pays less. Higher educational qualifications, and working conditions where physical effort is required gives higher wages. Data from the 1979 through 1987 waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth is used.

Assessing differential item validity of the AIDS-related social skills questionnaire among African adolescents

Article Abstract:

This study uses a sample of African adolescents to evaluate a psychological survey designed to measure social skills involved in AIDS-related behaviors. Findings indicate that less than half of the questions demonstrated differential item validity and that the questionnaire may not be a valid tool for international groups of adolescents.
