Social capital and opportunity in corporate R&D: the contingent effect of contact density on mobility expectations

Article Abstract:

Corporate R&D scientists who have less opportunities to develop social networks have higher expectations of job mobility. Working conditions which allow social networks to prosper are advantageous to professionals seeking for advancement. It is because social networks provide opportunities for employees to earn social capital. In addition, the cultural and structural background of a corporation influences how social networks turn into social capital.

Regression and matching estimates of the effects of elite college attendance on educational and career achievement

Article Abstract:

The estimate of elite college effects obtained with regression adjustment is compared to the estimates obtained with matching methods. It is suggested that attending an elite college yields an advantage with respect to educational achievement and occupational status, although wages are mixed.
