Standardization and the democratic design of information and communication technology

Article Abstract:

The link between the institutional design of standard development organizations (SDOs) and the democratic design of information and communication technology (ICT) is explored. Principles of democracy are reviewed in terms of the design of technology applied to standardization and the role of public policy is discussed.

Re-examining intellectual property rights in the context of standardization, innovation and the public sphere

Article Abstract:

The cultural roots of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) system and its relationship to innovation, creation and invention are examined. The political economy of IPR in the current business models and practices, the role of standards bodies and the need to re-conceptualize the public sphere is considered.

Information needs in groundwater protection policy: agenda-setting for knowledge development

Article Abstract:

The conceptual framework and method for identification of information needs in water policymaking are presented. The framework and method are applied to Dutch groundwater protection policy as a example of the importance of matching stakeholder needs.
