Why do people with mental retardation need sexuality education?

Article Abstract:

Sexuality education is very important for mentally retarded individuals because they are at a greater risk of sexual abuse than normal individuals. While educating these individuals, it is necessary to determine what they are able to comprehend and small groups should be given short sessions using different techniques and simple language. The parents of disabled individuals should understand the need for sex education and teach their children how to express their sexuality in a socially acceptable way. Anatomical awareness, moral standards and social information are the main components of sex education.

Comprehensive sexuality education for children and youth with disabilities

Article Abstract:

It is very important to give sexuality education to individuals with mental or physical disabilities because they are neither asexual nor unlikely to marry and have children. Sexuality education can decrease the risk of sexual abuse. The type of disability determines the way the information should be presented. It is necessary that the individuals develop interpersonal skills and self-esteem. This process is life-long and requires open discussions of the disabled individuals with their parents and caretakers.
