A view from above: The evolving sociological landscape

Article Abstract:

Networks built on sociology-relevant papers are examined to map sociology's position in the wider social sciences and identify changes in the most prominent research fronts in the discipline. Findings reveal that although sociology is central, it is not as well bounded as disciplines such as economics or law, and internally, sociology seems to have moved away from research topics associated with fundamental social processes and toward social-problems research.

Trends in sociology titles

Article Abstract:

A hypothesis that the article titles of the state publications in Sociology are getting longer was tested with data from American Sociological Review (ASR) since its inception from 1936 to 2001 and papers from Sociological Abstracts between 1963 and 1999. Results showed that there was indeed an increase in the title length, however, the title length did not predict citation, thereby meaning that long titles were not ways in which to get more readers.
