Contemporary Russian society: Problems and prospects

Article Abstract:

The major characteristics of the erstwhile Soviet society and the factors that led to its collapse are presented, with the main factor being the system's inability to capitalize on and exclusion of the nation's human potential. The social and economic problems faced by the contemporary Russian society are discussed, and it is suggested that Russia's transformation into a democratic, rule-of-law state is only possible through the development of an organized civil society capable of interacting with the ruling authority on equal terms.
