Cyberspace - a new medium for communication, command, and control by extremists

Article Abstract:

The benefits of increasingly sophisticated information and communication technologies are also being felt by extremist and terrorist organizations. These groups, the most active of which are the Islamist and the Far Right organizations, are using the Internet to recruit and to issue propaganda materials to their target audiences. These developments have placed this communication medium in danger of becoming a tool for command and control by these stealthy groups.

The advent of netwar: analytic background

Article Abstract:

The information revolution has led to the advent of 'netwar,' a mode of conflict where protagonists rely on network forms of doctrine, strategy, technology and organization. It has permitted small, previously isolated organizations to link up, communicate and conduct coordinated actions. The spectrum of conflict is composed of such groups as ethno-nationalists, criminals and terrorists, who pose threats to peace and order, and genuine social activists.

Article Abstract:

The advent of Middle Eastern terrorist groups that have more decentralized organizational structures is pointing to the adoption of an information-age style of conflict or netwar. As such , it is argued that these terrorist groups have a stake in keeping the Internet operational.
