Engaging publics in sociological dialogue through the media

Article Abstract:

Sociologists need to increase their involvement with the mass media to be able to relate sociological information to the public. Despite the abundance of socially and culturally-relevant sociological studies, sociologists fail to convey their messages to the public because of the lack of close association between them and the mass media. To improve the relationships between social scientists and the mass media, sociologists should work closely with their organizations' public information offices and publish op-ed articles to leading newspapers about their researches.

Beyond the science-versus-advocacy distinction

Article Abstract:

An attempt is made to demonstrate an alternative way to understand how social scientists participate in a policy via the mass media, and this is applied to examples used by Stacey and Rossi. A broad range of primary validators operate in a different institutional spheres, while secondary validators report on and diffuse their factual claims. The mass media have this role, but are also primary validators too, and their role is particularly important when factual claims are disputed as often happens in social policy controversies.

Stage fright or death wish: sociology in the mass media

Article Abstract:

The ongoing debate on the social and moral implications of Pres Bill Clinton's sexual scandal has resulted in the increased appearances of sociologists in television programs and newspaper opinion columns. Although the scandal has improved the media attention on sociological researches, sociologists have to develop their own issues to attract the interest of the mass media and the public. Sociologists have to publish books or write articles that are compelling enough to both the public and the mass media.
