Total Information Awareness (TIA), a DARPA program?aimed at?development of new methods of knowledge gathering, integration, and prediction, is?the?focus of a storm of comment and criticism. Critics are missing the point of this effort which could deliver search engines with capabilities far in advance of those in existing arrangements such as Google.

The consequences of hostile attacks on computer networks at Six Apart with the help of autonomous software known as bots are described. Efforts of researchers to penetrate Botnet, the network of independent, automated software, to prevent attacks in the future, are discussed.
