Maintaining wartime gains for women: lessons from El Salvador

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on two communities in El Salvador to examine their wartime efforts to promote women's development and problems in sustaining social gains after the war. The two communities are Copapayo and Ciudad Segundo Montes, whose residents were forced into exile during the early 1980's due to government bombings and massacres. Findings showed that wartime conditions have unified rural women for the purpose of meeting their social needs. However, social gains were eroded after women were reintroduced to their normal life.

Health care in the social development context: Indigenous, participatory and empowering approaches

Article Abstract:

Social development scholars and practitioners have increasingly advocated for more indigenous and participatory approaches in conducting health assessments and in the delivery of health programs of relevance to individuals, families and communities, due to the recognized connection between health and social development. A rationale for such participatory approaches is presented considering arguments arising in case studies from two different cultural contexts.

Ideological roots of Philippine social welfare

Article Abstract:

Philippine social welfare history suffers from ideological blindness implemented by the Spanish and American rulers. The Spanish and American colonial regimes' welfare initiatives carried ideological elements while constituting the seeds of organized social welfare in the Philippines that continue to have a preponderant influence on contemporary Philippine society and social work practice.
