Paternalism and breast implants

Article Abstract:

The decision by the FDA to prohibit silicon-gel implants has drawn some criticisms. Although the commissioner of FDA David A. Kessler claims the efficacy of implants were not proven, there has been no report of its adverse effects either. The action taken by the FDA may also create unnecessary fear among women who had had implants, which may lead to inessential surgery and lawsuits. The rights of women have also been violated by this prohibition since the right to make their own decision was denied.
