Pursuing rights and getting justice on China's ethnic frontier

Article Abstract:

The author investigates the causes of the tendency of ethnic Yi women in southwest China to obtain divorce in groups from their husbands in the 1950's. He asserts that this can be party explained by the empowerment given the women by the 1949 Chinese Revolution. A greater factor involves the formation of social networks and a degree of litigiousness that belies stereotypes.
