Romanian Roma, state transfers, and poverty: A study of relative disadvantage

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of policy measures aimed to combat poverty in the case of Roma from Romania is investigated, and the extent to which social transfers reach the Roma and alleviate their relatively disadvantageous situation is focused. It is indicated that neither income inequality nor the extent of poverty is significantly reduced through welfare measures and improving state transfers for children and the family constitutes the most effective way to combat poverty and social exclusion among the Romanian Roma.
