Seeking protection with UNHCR: a personal account

Article Abstract:

The Jesuit Refugee Service acts as the arm of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees branch in Nairobi, Kenya, in dealing with refugees seeking assistance and protection. Refugees are interviewed and screened to determine if they really need and deserve protection. Some volunteers who conduct the interview are nervous and aggressive. This attitude can be attributed to the pressure brought about by the nature of their work. However, such attitudes are an additional burden for refugees who simply seek protection.

A catechist for all refugees

Article Abstract:

Catechists in refugee camps help in the spiritual growth of refugees. Refugee catechists provide hope and keep the faith alive amid desperation and frustration. In the absence of a priest, a catechist serves as the only spiritual leader. For instance in the Fugnido refugee resettlement in Gambella Province, Ethiopia, catechist James Roah is in charge of 4,000 Catholics. Catechists administer evangelization, prayer and worship and charitable work.
