Severe mental illness and addictions: assessment considerations

Article Abstract:

Empirical literature on substance use assessment for individuals with severe mental illness are analyzed. It is argued that the best tools for screening are collateral information sources such as friends, family and treatment providers. It is also shown that the diagnosis of comorbid disorders is made difficult by sources of uncertainty including insufficient abstinence to rule out substance-induced symptoms and poor memory. The appropriate outcome measures for substance abuse and treatment planning are discussed.
