Sociology under totalitarianism

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the impact totalitarianism had on the work of sociologists in the Soviet Union, before the collapse of that state, are examined. Topics include the totalitarian ideology of sociology, demands of the state to conform to the ideology, scientific quality, the gap between ideology and reality, censorship, and the choices regarding scientific accuracy sociologists had to face during the time.

Issues related to social and political conflict in Russia after the demise of the Soviet Union are examined, focusing on the role the political leadership may take in managing it. Topics include communication between the ruling class and the ruled, theoretical approaches to conflict, and the potential for introducing the art of political conflict management to citizens.
